Basic Package

Day 1 - from 9 am to 5 pm

This is a long tour through the west side of the island, mainly by car, stopping on some hot spots to watch birds and plants. First stop will be on a high valley covered with Laurel forest where we may not only breathe fresh air but also see the Trocaz Pigeon (Columba trocaz) and Madeira Firecrest (Regullus madeirensis). Then the tour heads to the only plateau of Madeira to look for some old Fetid Laurels (Laurus azorica) and also Madeira Chaffinch. Lunch is included and it will be in Porto Moniz. On the afternoon the tour will pass through the southwest of the island between the less developed parishes of Madeira, where people still live from agriculture.

Day 2 - morning sea trip from 10,30 am to 13,30 pm & night from 9 pm to 1 am

In the morning destination is Cape Girão, one of the highest capes in the world. Leaving from Funchal’s marina the boat goes some 2 to 3 miles away from shore to try to observe some seabirds, dolphins, turtles and maybe whales. Then it heads to the clear waters under Cape Girão where one may go for a swim. The way back to Funchal is nearer the coast so you may appreciate some details of the south coast of Madeira.

At about 9 pm the destination is Pico do Areeiro, where we will walk for about 25 minutes, up and down the mountain, to reach a place near the breeding area of Zino’s Petrel (Pterodroma madeira). Be one of the few to see this threaten seabird in a romantic atmosphere, above the clouds, under the stars on the third highest peak of Madeira.

It starts with a pedestrian path on São Lourenço peninsula, with 6 km distance, during about 4 hours. Here it is possible to observe flora species with high interest, not only for its capacity of adaptation to a barren area but also for the presence of endemic species.
From fauna we detach the presence of the Berthelot’s Pipit (Anthus bertheloti madeirensis) Goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis parva), Madeiran Rock Sparrow (Petronia petronia madeirensis) and still the Madeira endemic Wall Lizard (Lacerda dugesii).
